The Art of Ross Young
The art of Ross Young has been described as painterly and forthright, a true expression of the places and sports he knows so well. A lifelong hunter and fisherman, Young knows the adrenaline rush of a covey rise, the smell of dawn as ducks cup into the decoys and the thrill of a trout rising to a well-placed fly. Personal experiences like these add authenticity to his paintings and invite the viewer to relive his/her own outdoor adventures.
Ross received his Bachelor of Fine Art and Master of Art degrees in painting from the University of Tulsa. Over the years, Ross has exhibited his work in national and international art shows, galleries and museums. He is a member of Oil Painters of America as well as the American Impressionist Society. His clients include such corporate giants as Nestle Purina, International Paper Company and Procter & Gamble (Eukanuba).
A professional artist since 1980, Ross’ award winning art spans a number of painting genres. His repertoire of subjects includes upland bird hunting, fly fishing, wildlife, landscapes and Ross has the honor of painting the most distinguished sporting dogs in the world. Since 1997, the Nestle Purina Company has commissioned Ross to annually paint 14 of their Outstanding Field Trial Dog Award portraits. He is the official artist for the National Pointing Dog Championship, the American Field Quail and Pheasant Futurity, the Continental Championship (all of which have been running for over 100 years), the N.S.T.R.A. Trial of Champions, the National Open Shooting Dog Championship, the U.S. Shooting Dog Invitational Championship, the GSP Shooting Dog Invitational and the Vizsla National Championship.
Ross’ works have appeared on the covers of or in magazines such as Pointing Dog Journal, Gun Dog, Quail Unlimited, American Field, Grouse Point Almanac, Sporting Tales, Retriever Journal, Wildlife Art, Field Trial, Shotgun Sports, Upland Almanac, Ultimate Outdoors and U.S. Art. To date, Ross has published over 75 limited edition prints including 20 to benefit the Ozark Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Over 45 of his paintings hang in the National Bird Dog Museum and Field Trial Hall of Fame located in Grand Junction, TN.
When Ross is not at work in his studio, you will most likely find him out doing what he loves most: hunting, fly fishing or field training bird dogs. Ross divides his working time between his main studio located in a rural setting just outside of Springfield, MO, and his mobile studio “Arlo” which could be about anywhere. Ross’ paintings may be viewed at www.rossyoung.com or by appointment at the Ross B. Young Art Studio, affectionately known as “The Dog House.”
